This is the time to be narrowing down your college choices, filling out fafsa or aid, and having fun. If you have not made your decision yet, it's okay. You still have time. Meanwhile, you could always apply to La Roche College. Since we are rolling admission we are still taking applications and look forward to seeing your application. Though we are a private institution we are very affordable. About 94% of our students receive financial aid to assist with tuition and room & board. On top of that all of our students qualify for a scholarship from La Roche when they are admitted. The scholarship amount ranges from $8,000 (which is enough to cover room and board) to $1,000 and is based on GPA. So if you are looking for a school with character think about La Roche College.

If you want more information about federal aid go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Winter Blues

Hello everyone. How is it out there? Things have been crazy for me here in the office. As you already know, we were out for winter break for about two weeks. This gave us some time to prepare for what I like to call the "Winter Slam." Winter Slam is the rush of applications received during the time we are gone for break. I think I received at least 50 applications alone. I can only imagine what the other counselors got. Now that things have returned to normal I can focus on answering your questions. Things seem to be pretty cheerful in the office these days. Our gift to our prospective students is waiving the fee of the online application from now until 1/1/08. That's $50 saved. During this time of the year you could do a lot with $50. This is also a great time to apply. Everyone is home during the holidays. You could take a few hours to fill out your application, write your essay, and ask your employer or church member to write you a recommendation. All of that could be done by Jan. 1. Then when you return to school all you have left to do is request a transcript, send us your SAT/ACT scores, and ask your counselor to write a recommendation. This could all be done in a few days. I'm officially welcoming myself back to the office. It's been a wonderful travel season. I have been all over New Jersey and New York. Throughout my travels I have spoken to many prospective college students. It was nice to meet such eager students. Many of them had questions that you all might have.
1. Where is La Roche?
La Roche is located in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh, PA.
2. How big is La Roche:
La Roche's total student population is around 1500 students. Our undergraduate population is just over 1000. We are the size of a large high school. This is great if you are looking for an atmosphere where you really get to know people around you and if you want to learn in a close knit community.
3. What majors are most popular at La Roche?
La Roche offers a variety of majors. The most popular would be Graphic Design, Interior Design, Nursing, and Criminal Justice.
4. If you are a Catholic school, do I have to take a religion class or attend mass
No, we do no force students to attend mass. That is a personal choice that you must make. Also, if you are interested in attending church but you are not Catholic, a non-denominational service is provided Sunday night and afterward there is a pizza party held. Religion classes are not enforced unless they are a part of your curriculum.

The Importance of Doing Your Research

Hello all:
For the past two weeks I've been traveling all over the states of New Jersey and New York. One thing that I am concerned about with most of all the students I have run into is that no one is doing their research. Students, you have to research the schools you are potentially going to apply to. It's always nice to get some advice from family and friends who have had experience at different colleges but that doesn't mean that that school is the right fit for you. Find out about class size, total population, dorm life, student life, etc. Most importantly, VISIT AS MANY SCHOOLS AS POSSIBLE!!! If you have the time and the school is within distance for you to travel, check it out. Reading about a school or asking others about a school will not give you the same feeling as being able to walk the halls of your future school. School tours can make or break your decision. Take my word for it, when I was looking for schools, tours completely changed my mind. I couldn't have made a better choice.

And the season continues.....

It's been a while since I've last posted. To update you on my travels, last week I visited Archbishop Spalding High School in Baltimore, MD for a day. It made me happy to see so many prospective juniors asking questions about college. This week I am in Mt. Arlington, NJ and in New York City. Mt. Arlington is a beautiful area fulled with eager seniors and juniors. The later part of the week I will spend in various areas of New York including Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. Who knows, I may just run into you at one of my fairs during my travels. Be sure to stop by my table and say hello.

All of this traveling has truly taught me a lot about the work of admissions. In the beginning of my travel season, I was very nervous because I wanted to be the very best that I could be. It took time to develop my style but now I am very confident about my work and want to meet more students like yourself. I guess my experiences can be compared to deciding on a college. In the beginning, you are nervous about making the right choice. After visiting various schools and learning about what is important to you, you realize that it's not so hard after all because you know what you want.

A long week

What a week it's been. It's only Tuesday but I have been on an adventure. This past weekend I was at the Long Island NACAC. That was a great fair for me. There were lots of interesting people to meet there. I also got the opportunity to see my sister and my newphews, who I haven't seen since I graduated in May. Now I am traveling to various locations in New Jersey near the Clinton area. I visit about 3-4 different schools a day. During my visits, I have met wonderful people. After this week, I'll be in Maryland (which is my first official trip there.) The week after that, I'm back in NYC doing the Big Apple College Fairs. If you are there, stop by and visit me.

Welcome

Hello all,
Welcome to my blog space.
